Phenolic Fiberglass Gratings - U.S. Coast Guard Approved

Canadian Composite Structures manufactures both pultruded and molded phenolic fiberglass gratings that are US Coast Guard Approved, meeting Level 2 structural integrity in accordance with USCG PFM 2-98. Phenolic products are also often specified in applications where safety from fire is a concern because of their extremely low flame spread and smoke index. Pultruded fiberglass gratings have traditionally satisfied the rigorous fire resistant properties and structural integrity after a fire demanded by USCG. Now, there is a molded product that exceeds the USCG Requirements and offers all the additional benefits of an integrally cast molded product.  CCS also offers molded and pultruded fiberglass grating to meet NORSOK requirements of 19mm max open size.

Molded Phenolic Fiberglass Grating - USCG Approved (Approval 164.040/5/0)

This integrally cast construction fiberglass grating, with level __ acceptance, and approximately 60% resin, offers unparalleled impact resistance, maximum corrosion resistance protection for the glass reinforcement and a significantly improved UV resistance.

U.S.C.G. Molded Fiberglass Grating Advantages

  • Unparalleled impact resistance
  • One piece construction
  • Bi-directional strength
  • Easy fabrication

Pultruded Phenolic Fiberglass Grating – USCG Approved (Approval 164.040/6/0)

Pultruded phenolic fiberglass grating meets all the requirements of level 2 integrity as defined by USCG PFM 2-98. Pultruded phenolic fiberglass grating is the stiffest grating available, with approximately 70% fiberglass.

U.S.C.G. Pultruded Fiberglass Grating Advantages

  • High uni-directional strength
  • Available in panels up to 4’ wide x 24’ long
  • Flame spread rating of 10 and smoke index of 135 (when tested in accordance with ASTM E-84)

Testing

Canadian Composite Structures’s Phenolic Fiberglass Grating has obtained U.S. Coast Guard approval by surpassing both level 2 and level 3 tests. The USCG test requires the sample grating to be exposed to 927°C (1700° F) for one hour as per ASTM E-119, adjacent to a comparable steel grating. Canadian Composite Structures’s Phenolic Molded Fiberglass Grating carried 140 psf uniformed load during the test, exceeding the requirement of 94 psf by a factor of 1.49.

For Level 3 Acceptance:

The fiberglass grating is required to not fail within 100°C of comparable steel grating, as well as support a center load of 40kg.

For Level 2 Acceptance:

The fiberglass grating must pass level 3 tests and then support a minimum uniform load of 4.5 kpa (94 psf).
